Picolinic acid (PA) is an amino acid metabolite produced in the liver and kidney of man and other mammals. Detectable amounts are found in common foods such as cow’s milk and brewer’s yeast. A chelating agent, PA binds spontaneously to transition metals such as chromium, zinc, and iron, and plays a physiological role in trace mineral absorption. A recent study shows that supplementation with Chromium Picolinate increases the body’s efficient absorption of Chromium by as much as ten times.
In animal studies, picolinic acid is well tolerated. It has been reported that a giant daily dose of 750 mg/ kg is required to produce chronic toxicity in rats. At very high concentrations in tissue culture, picolinic acid has been shown to alter cell structure and function owing to chelation of iron, but these concentrations are immensely higher than one could ever achieve by supplementing with reasonable amounts of mineral picolinates. This means that picolinic acid is very, very safe.
The nutritional trivalent form of chromium (Cr+3) in this product is also noted for its low toxicity, particularly when administered orally. In testing toxicity of Cr+3 in animals by feeding orally, it never proved possible to kill an animal, no matter how high the dosage! In fact, mice and rats fed extra Cr+3 thrived, and appeared to be more resistant to infection.
Considering the natural status and minimal toxicity of its constituents, the lack of toxicity or side effects noted for Chromium Picolinate is not surprising. In clinical studies with chromium picolinate, no adverse effects have been noted at all. In light of this fact, Chromium Picolinate is the supplement of choice for millions of people who are now using the product, safely and effectively.
